Mission Statement & History

As a family united by faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior through God's Word and Sacrament, our mission is to give witness to the power of the Gospel by acting justly, loving tenderly, and walking humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).  We commit ourselves through prayer, worship and fellowship, to mutually support, love, and respect others, and to be available to assist all that are victims of an emergency or injustice.  We welcome those who are searching for a relationship with Christ.

History

The Mountain City Presbyterian Church was born in revival.  In the early summer of 1943 Rev. Dan H. Graham held an evangelistic meeting in Mountain City in which there were more than sixty professions of faith in Christ.  From this dynamic beginning the MCPC was formed. Soon after the revival the Holston Presbytery established a commission to organize a Presbyterian church in Mountain City.   In June 1943 the Presbytery bought the old Southern Methodist Church on S. Church Street, where services would be held for the next thirty-two years.  The formal organization of the church was on October 31 that same year with Rev. Dan Graham as minister.

In those early days a Sunday School program was established, as well as Women of the Church.  By early 1946 the first church officers were ordained and installed. In June 1970 the MCPC became a self-supporting church, and under the leadership of Dr. R. T. L. Liston plans were developed for a new church building, which was dedicated in June 1975.  By 1979 the mortgage on the new building was retired.

Over the past three decades the Mountain City Presbyterian Church has been served by a series of dedicated ministers and elders, and blessed by a congregation devoted to carrying out the church’s stated mission.  They are genuinely committed to both Remembering and Renewing.  Everyone is welcome to join in this pilgrimage of service to the Lord.  Come grow and serve with us!

Church Beliefs

The Mountain City Presbyterian Church is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) and is a member of the Holston Presbytery and the Synod of Living Waters.  Our church is grounded doctrinally in the Reformed tradition, which emphasizes the sovereignty of God, the authority and truthfulness of His Word as embodied in the Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments, and salvation by faith in Jesus Christ. We frequently profess our faith publicly by the words of the Apostles' Creed.  We practice two sacraments: Baptism and Communion (Lord's Supper).    We are committed to both domestic and foreign missions and to God's call to  preach the Good News of salvation through Christ  to all people.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
